Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, commonly known as Caravaggio, c.1571-1610.
While I mostly look at and study contemporary art – I have always been intrigued and slightly obsessed with the painter Caravaggio, especially the painting Judith beheading Holofernes, c.1599. Caravaggio was born in the Duchy of Milan in 1571. (at the time, part of the Spanish Empire). Caravaggio painted this image when he was only 28, a masterpiece of old age and youth and ultimately of good and evil. The dramatic light makes it hard to turn away from the act of violence. He was a master of drama. I am affected mainly by the image of Judith and the act that she must perform – the wrinkles in her face are rendered with so much pain and are simultaneously hyper-realistic. The painting was disappeared or lost and did not resurface until about 1951. (this is another topic of research!)

Caravaggio trained under the artist Simone Peterzano beginning in 1584. He started working as an independent artist in his twenties, around 1590
Caravaggio’s artistic journey took him from Rome to Naples, where he spent the last part of his life. His final painting, created in Naples, is a testament to his enduring talent and will be on view at the National Gallery in London until the end of July. This is a unique opportunity to see the culmination of Caravaggio’s artistic career and appreciate his legacy.
